About the Alliance for Environmental Responsibility and Openness (AERO)

From Kitty Hawk to the moon and beyond, the American aerospace industry remains at the forefront of scientific innovation, discovery and achievement. It is impossible to imagine a world today without airplanes to take us from one side of the earth to the other, without jet fighters to defend our country, without rockets to launch satellites that feed our televisions and telephones, or space shuttles to explore beyond the limits of the Earth. These and many other inventions resulting from the innovative work of the aerospace industry have changed the way we work, travel and live.

Yet for every advance in science and human achievement, there are also risks. The Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA) is proud to sponsor AERO as part of its ongoing efforts to inform and educate the public about these risks-and to demonstrate our commitment to safety, responsibility and openness on the critical issue of environmental stewardship.

The Challenge of Environmental Responsibility

Producing and maintaining airplanes, jet engines and rockets is a challenging process-a process that requires the use of several essential aerospace materials, at times including several chemical solvents, such as:
  • 1,4-Dioxane,
  • Trichloroethylene (TCE), and
  • Tetrachloroethylene ("PCE" or "PERC")
Many of these materials are in the food we eat and the clothes we wear and pose no danger in small doses-but in some cases, and in large amounts, these chemicals can present environmental problems and health risks. For this reason, AERO is dedicated to a two-pronged strategy of prevention and response, based on our industry-wide pledge to support Regulation & Responsibility.

A Commitment to Health, Safety and Innovation

AERO is a key part of the aerospace industry's answer to all of these important challenges. We are watchful, ready, and-with cooperation and oversight from the federal government-committed to taking steps that will ensure the health and safety of the American people.

In the 21st century, America's aerospace industry will continue to lead the way in discovery, transportation, science and national defense. And all the while, the AIA and its member companies remain dedicated to transparent and responsible environmental practices, keeping the American people healthy and safe at home as, working together, we reach out toward new heights and technological achievement.

Today, alternative cleaning methods—including water, citrus, or alcohol-based cleaners—are the aerospace industry standard, providing for a safer and healthier environment.
